Common faults

What Usually Goes Wrong with a Hood

A hood is a blower, a speed control and a light circuit inside one canopy. Almost every call is one of those three, or ductwork that has stopped moving air.

Weak Suction with the Blower Running

Grease-loaded baffle filters, a blocked duct or a damper that no longer opens. The motor sounds normal and the air still does not move.

Blower Will Not Start

The speed control or the relay on the board has failed, or the motor capacitor is dead. A remote blower adds a second run of wiring that can open anywhere along it.

Blower Runs Only on High

The speed control board has lost its lower taps, so the motor gets full voltage in every position. On mechanical models the rotary switch contacts are burnt.

Loud Rattle or Vibration

The blower wheel is out of balance from grease build-up, or a mounting bracket has worked loose. Dry bearings give a steady whine instead of a rattle.

Lights Out but the Fan Works

The lamp transformer or the LED driver has failed. On halogen models the sockets themselves burn and stop making contact.

Touch Panel Ignores You

Heat and grease reach the membrane behind the glass. Once the ribbon connector corrodes, buttons fire at random or not at all.

Grease Dripping from the Canopy

The filters are saturated and the tray has overflowed, or the duct run has no slope and drains back into the hood.

Hood Turns On by Itself

The heat sensor that boosts the fan is reading high, or a shorted membrane keeps a button closed. Both look identical from the front.

Questions

Viking Hood FAQ

Answered by our dispatch team.

My hood is loud but barely pulls air. What is that?

Usually saturated filters or a blocked duct, not the motor. We check the airflow at the hood before we quote anything.

Do you work on remote and in-line blowers?

Yes. Roof and in-line blowers are common on Viking hoods, and we service the motor, the wiring and the switch that feeds them.

The lights work but the fan does not. Is that the motor?

Not always. The speed control and the capacitor fail more often than the motor itself, and both cost less to replace.

How long does a hood repair take?

Most visits are finished in one trip, usually under two hours. If a part has to be ordered we set the return date before we leave.

Do you use original Viking parts?

Yes, original parts wherever they are available. If a part is discontinued we tell you what the alternative is before we fit it.

Can you replace the halogen lamps with LED?

Only where Viking offers an LED kit for your model. We do not fit parts the hood was not built for.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Clear the cooktop under the hood and have the model number handy if you can find it. Everything else is on us.

Still have a question? Call (888) 000-0000 or book online.
