Common faults

What Usually Goes Wrong with a Cooktop

A cooktop is a burner box under a single surface, with one ignition or induction system feeding every zone. Most calls come down to the ignition side or the control side.

Burner Clicks but Will Not Light

The spark module keeps firing because the flame sensor never confirms ignition. Usually a fouled electrode, a burner cap sitting wet or crooked, or a clogged port underneath.

All Burners Spark at Once

One switch or a wet electrode keeps the spark module energised, so every position fires together. The clicking stops only when the shorted circuit is dried out or replaced.

Low or Yellow Flame

The orifice, the air shutter or the regulator is out of spec. After a propane conversion the wrong orifice set gives a lazy yellow flame and soot on the pan.

Simmer Will Not Hold a Low Flame

The low flame screw inside the valve is out of adjustment, or the burner port is partly blocked, so the flame drops out as soon as the knob passes the click.

Induction Zone Cuts Out Under Load

The coil overheats or the fan below the glass is clogged, and the board shuts the zone down to protect itself. The error code usually points at the sensor on the coil.

Touch Controls Ignore You or Fire on Their Own

Moisture or grease under the glass bridges the capacitive pads. If the ribbon connector or the control board is corroded the panel starts behaving at random.

Cracked or Chipped Glass Top

A chip beside a zone lets liquid reach the element and the wiring underneath. The top comes off and the glass is replaced as a unit, it is not patched.

Knob Turns but Nothing Happens

The valve stem is stripped or the gas valve has seized after years of grease. On electric models the infinite switch has failed open.

Questions

Viking Cooktop FAQ

Answered by our dispatch team.

My burner clicks but never lights. Can that be fixed?

Almost always. Nine times out of ten it is the electrode or the burner cap, not the valve. We clean or replace the part and test every burner before we leave.

Do you work on induction cooktops?

Yes. Induction boards, coils and cooling fans are the parts that fail, and we carry the common ones for 30 and 36 inch models.

The glass on my cooktop is cracked. Do you replace it?

Yes. The glass top is replaced as a complete unit. We order it by model number and fit it as soon as it arrives.

How long does a cooktop repair take?

Most visits are finished in one trip, usually under two hours. If a part has to be ordered we set the return date before we leave.

Do you use original Viking parts?

Yes, original parts wherever they are available. If a part is discontinued we tell you what the alternative is before we fit it.

Can you replace a single burner or does the whole top come out?

A burner, its cap, head and valve are replaced on their own. The glass or the burner box only comes out when the fault is underneath it.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Clear the counter around the cooktop and have the model number handy if you can find it. Everything else is on us.
