Common faults

What Usually Goes Wrong with a Side-by-Side

A side-by-side cools both compartments from one evaporator in the freezer and feeds the fresh food side through an air damper. That single detail explains most of the calls we get on these units.

Fresh Food Side Warm, Freezer Still Cold

The most common side-by-side call. Cold air reaches the fridge side through a damper and a fan from the freezer, so the fault is usually the damper, the evaporator fan or a defrost circuit that stopped clearing ice off the coil.

Water Dispenser Dead, Ice Still Working

Points at the water side alone: the inlet valve, a clogged filter, or the supply tube frozen inside the door. The ice maker keeps running because it is fed before the split.

Ice Maker Stopped Producing

Mold heater, ejector motor or fill tube. On built-ins the fill tube frosts over first, and the unit keeps cycling without ever dropping a cube.

Ice Jams in the Chute

The chute flap and its heater keep the passage clear. Once the flap stops sealing, humid room air condenses in the chute and freezes the cubes into a plug.

Frost Building on the Freezer Back Wall

Defrost heater, defrost thermostat or a gasket that stopped sealing. Frost on the wall points at defrost; frost near the door points at the gasket.

Unit Runs Constantly or Sounds Loud

On built-ins the condenser sits behind the top grille and packs with dust. A blocked coil or a stopped condenser fan makes the compressor run without ever reaching temperature.

Doors Sitting Uneven or Gap at the Top

Two tall narrow doors, each carrying a custom panel and a dispenser. Hinges and closers wear, the door stops pulling shut on its own, and the seal goes with it.

Water Pooling Inside or Under the Unit

Usually the defrost drain tube frozen at the bottom of the freezer, or the water line fitting behind the unit. Both look the same from the kitchen floor.

Questions

Side-by-Side Refrigerator FAQ

Answered by our dispatch team.

My fridge side is warm but the freezer is fine. What is that?

On a side-by-side both compartments are cooled from one evaporator in the freezer, and the fresh food side gets its cold air through a damper and a fan. When the fridge side alone goes warm, the fault is almost always in that path: the damper, the fan, or ice on the coil because defrost stopped running. It is rarely the compressor.

Ice works but water does not. Is that one repair or two?

One. Water and ice split after the inlet valve, so a dead dispenser with a working ice maker points at the valve, the filter or the tube inside the door. The technician confirms which on site.

Do you work on built-in 42" and 48" units?

Yes, including panel-ready doors. The unit is pulled from the cabinetry and reset without marking the millwork, and the panel alignment is set back the way it was.

How long does a side-by-side repair take?

It depends on the fault and whether the part is on the truck. Dampers, fans, heaters and valves are common enough that we carry them. Anything model-specific is ordered against the serial number, and you get the timing in writing with the quote.

Do you use original Viking parts?

We use OEM parts identified by the serial number on your unit. Viking revised components across model years, so the model name alone is not enough to order the right one.

Is it worth repairing an older side-by-side?

Usually yes on a built-in. A replacement means the cabinetry opening, the panels and the water line all have to work with the new unit, which turns a repair into a kitchen job. If we think yours is past sensible repair, the technician will say so on site.

Do I need to empty the refrigerator before you arrive?

No. Leave it as it is. If the technician needs a compartment cleared to reach the evaporator or the damper, he will say so on site and it takes a few minutes. Only pull the unit out of the cabinetry yourself if you are certain the flooring can take it.
