Common faults

What Usually Goes Wrong with a Wall Oven

A wall oven sits sealed into the cabinetry with its controls, its cooling fan and its wiring all behind the trim. Most calls come down to the heating circuit, the sensor that governs it, or the door that holds the heat in.

Oven Will Not Heat at All

On electric ovens it is usually the bake or broil element gone open circuit; on gas it is the igniter no longer drawing enough current to open the safety valve. Both look identical from the front.

Temperature Drifting Off the Dial

The oven sensor and the control board decide when the element runs. A drifting sensor reports a temperature the cavity never reached, and the oven cycles around the wrong number.

Upper and Lower Cavities Behaving Differently

On a double oven each cavity has its own element, sensor and relay, and they share only the board. When one cavity alone misbehaves, the fault is inside that cavity.

Door Not Closing Flush or Glass Fogging

Hinges carry a heavy door with a triple glass pack. Once a hinge spring goes, the door sits proud, heat escapes at the top and moisture gets between the panes.

Cooling Fan Running Long After Shutdown

Normal for a while, a fault when it never stops. Usually the thermal switch behind the trim or the board that reads it.

Self-Clean Ends With a Locked Door

The door lock motor and its switch. After a clean cycle the latch stays engaged, and forcing it damages the mechanism rather than freeing it.

Control Panel Dead or Buttons Unresponsive

The touch membrane or the board behind it. On built-in installs the supply at the junction box is worth checking before anything is ordered.

Burning Smell or Tripping the Breaker

A failed element that has arced, or scorched wiring at the terminal block behind the oven. Both need the unit pulled from the cabinetry to see.

Questions

Viking Wall Oven FAQ

Answered by our dispatch team.

The oven runs hot or cold compared to the dial. Can that be fixed?

Yes. It is usually the oven sensor drifting, and the board is heating to the number that sensor reports. We measure the cavity against the setpoint before deciding whether it is the sensor, a calibration offset, or the board.

On my double oven only the top cavity works. Is that one repair?

Usually one. Each cavity has its own element, sensor and relay, and they share only the control board. When one cavity alone is out, the fault is almost always inside that cavity rather than in the shared board.

Do you work on built-in 27 and 30 inch ovens, gas and electric?

Yes, single and double. The oven is pulled from the cabinetry and reset without marking the millwork, and the trim is set back the way it was.

How long does a wall oven repair take?

It depends on the fault and whether the part is on the truck. Elements, sensors, igniters and door hinges are common enough that we carry them. Anything model-specific is ordered against the serial number, and you get the timing in writing with the quote.

Do you use original Viking parts?

We use OEM parts identified by the serial number on your unit. Viking revised components across model years, so the model name alone is not enough to order the right one.

Is it worth repairing an older wall oven?

Usually yes on a built-in. A replacement means the cabinetry opening and the trim have to work with the new unit, which turns a repair into a carpentry job. If we think yours is past sensible repair, the technician will say so on site.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Empty the cavity if there is anything in it and leave the rest. If the technician needs the oven pulled from the cabinetry to reach the terminal block, he will do that on site.
