Common faults

What Usually Goes Wrong with a Microwave

A microwave is a high voltage circuit, a chain of door interlocks and a control board. Nearly every call is one of those three, and the interlocks are the ones that fail first.

Runs but Does Not Heat

The magnetron, the high voltage diode or the capacitor has failed. The fan and the light still work, so the unit looks healthy from the front.

Dead After the Door Was Slammed

A door interlock switch has welded or gone open and taken the fuse with it. This is the single most common microwave failure.

Door Will Not Latch

The latch hooks or the spring inside the handle assembly are worn. Running it with a bad latch damages the interlocks next.

Loud Humming Under Load

The magnetron or the high voltage transformer is breaking down. The noise rises with the power level and often trips the breaker.

Turntable Will Not Turn

The drive motor or the coupler under the tray has failed. On drawer models the rail motor and its belt do the same job.

Drawer Will Not Open or Close

The rail motor, a limit switch or a jammed track. The board stops the drawer part way to protect the mechanism.

Panel Dead or Buttons Stuck

The membrane behind the glass or the control board has failed. Heat from the cooktop below shortens their life on built-in installs.

Sparking Inside the Cavity

The waveguide cover is burnt or the cavity lining has chipped through to bare metal. Both need replacing before the unit is used again.

Questions

Viking Microwave FAQ

Answered by our dispatch team.

My microwave runs but the food stays cold. Is it worth fixing?

Usually yes on a built-in. The magnetron and the high voltage parts are replaceable, and a built-in costs far more to replace than to repair.

The microwave went completely dead. What is that?

Nine times out of ten it is a door interlock switch and the fuse it took with it. Both are stocked parts.

Do you work on drawer microwaves?

Yes. Rail motors, limit switches and drawer boards are the parts that fail, and we carry the common ones.

How long does a microwave repair take?

Most visits are finished in one trip, usually under two hours. If a part has to be ordered we set the return date before we leave.

Do you use original Viking parts?

Yes, original parts wherever they are available. If a part is discontinued we tell you what the alternative is before we fit it.

It sparks inside when it runs. Can I keep using it?

No. Stop using it and call us. Sparking means the waveguide cover or the cavity lining has failed.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Empty the microwave and clear the counter under it. Have the model number handy if you can find it.

Still have a question? Call (888) 000-0000 or book online.
